  • To Oswald, At 16

    Dear, Unsealers:

This is me in 2023, writing to myself at age 16.

I see the photo of him from December 2001, four months removed from a double leg surgery. In the background at his own birthday party. Clutching onto the walker to keep his balance. While trying to find a reason to smile.

I want to let him know, there will be plenty more days of joy in the years ahead. He will have the cast removed from his leg and be able to walk on his own two feet. And that moment will be one that he’ll treasure for the rest of his lifetime.

Once the brace comes off, the world will no longer be as off limits. With all the strength and courage returning, Europe will come calling. A trip every year for five straight years. He’ll keep on going as he keeps exploring the continent and writes about his experiences. The photos and videos taken will also convey what it was like to travel solo.

He’ll graduate from high school and college, with the diplomas on the wall to prove it. Along with the poster from his book, “A Poetic Journey, Staying At Home” on the wall of his bedroom when his writing and poetry begin to take shape.

It might not look like it at 16, but there will still be plenty of life to be lived. And your story of resilience will go on to inspire other people to see beyond their limitations.

    • Oswald, you are such a powerful storyteller. I am so sorry you had to go through that at 16, but you are right, you are so resilient. I am glad you got to see the world, and you didn’t let anything hold you back from travel. You are such a sweet soul and I am lucky to know you! Thank you for always sharing your heart with us. <3 Lauren

    • Wow Oswalt!! Reading the letter I felt saddened by you forcing a smile on your birthday. It sucks I was there at 17,16,15…. but I am so so grateful you shared the silver lining and you traveled! And every year at that! How was Europe? Where is the next trip? I’m excited to hear more. Wishing you well. 🙂

  • An Ode To My Scarred Body

    Dear, Unsealers:

As I looked at my silhouette on the beach in Rincon, Puerto Rico the sunlight surrounds the shadow.

I can’t help but smile when I see my entire body in the early morning light. I’ve been holding it back for so long. Covering it up with socks, shoes and jeans. Making excuses for not joining in the fun. Now, I’m walking along the beach barefoot. It doesn’t matter that there’s not a soul around, just me.

The scars on the right leg from a double surgery back in 2001 are ever present, all seven of them. And the scars from the pins that used to be in my three middle toes. I feel the sensation of the sand softly walking up and down the beach. The splash of the water getting closer to the waves. And the breeze of the water surrounding me. Life feels good right now.

Days like this weren’t possible before. I was so afraid that everyone would gawk at my body. Heaven knows it came up for criticism during my younger years from loved ones. And I’ll be the first to admit that my body is an imperfect vessel.

But in this moment, I embrace myself fully and all the scars that I have. Without my scars I wouldn’t be the resilient person that I am.

A Welcome, To The Month of June

    Dear Unsealers,

As I’ve done on the first day of each month for the last three years, I write a poem to welcome in the new month. It’s crazy to think that five months have already passed, and so much has happened since 2023 began. A new temporary job after eight years in my previous one, co-hosting an open mic for poets with disabilities and attempting to move forward on becoming an independent adult. So many poems and writings created, with many people past and present making stops in my life.

Now, the summer is beginning to take hold prior to the season’s formal beginning. June is a blank slate right now, there’s a lot of space to fill between now and the 30th.

    Without further ado…the poem:

    Welcome, the month of June!
As the year is flying by

The sixth month is here already
    30 new days have arrived

    A month of transition
Spring’s ending and summer’s on the horizon

Endless days of blue skies shining
Longer twlight leads the warm nights

A blank slate is on tap right now
It won’t stay that way for long

    It’s time to close out
An eventful first half of the year

    Happy Mother's Day!

    Dear Unsealers,
The following message is in honor of Mother’s Day.
For all the mother’s of the world. And the aunts, grandmothers, pet moms, mothers to be and all the motherly figures of the world.
With an extra moment of love for those that find today difficult and for those whose mother is no longer with them.

    The poem:

A message of love & praise
For all the mothers, aunts, grandmothers and motherly figures

An appreciation for all that you do
    And everything that you’ve done

As the anchors for a better world
    Caring, inspiring, nurturing & loving

With an extra sprinkle of love
To those that see this day as difficult
For those that miss their moms

One day doesn’t do justice to moms
Whose impact is recognized every day of the year

From me to you, I wish everyone

    A Happy Mother’s Day

    The Cocoon Phase

I wrote this poem back in March, but it’s come back to life now. With a nod to Dr. Nicole LePera, the holistic psychologist.

    The Coccoon Phase

A time where I hold back
    To dissapear from the world
    Figuring out who I am

As the strands wrap around me
    There’s no space left
    For worries, doubts or fears
All I see is the cocoons interior

    Inside…
    It’s all white & empty

    Full of blank space
    Separated from all that’s been

As I sit within the silence
    Planning my metamorphosis
    Wings of inner strength form

    Given time…
I will emerge frozm the cocoon

To fly high in the sky

    • The cocoon stage is a great form of symbolizing the flow of life and the changes we go through. And it’s also a very good form of imagery and in my opinion this counts as a double entendre because the cocoon stage has to do with butterflies and the changes they go through to be the best form of themselves and this can also symbolize the changes we…read more

A Welcome To The Month of April

    Dear Unsealers,
I usually write a poem to welcome in each month. To make it feel welcome. In this case, I welcome in the month of April. As the second quarter of the year has only just begun.

The poems goes something like this…

A welcome to the month of April

As a quarter of the year has gone by
    The second quarter begins

    30 new days ahead
    Spring starts to open up

    A month of devotion
In honor of the earth, deities and poetry

New life rises from the ground
And sprouting leaves in the trees

With the day’s longer, warming light
    Alternating between the April showers

The fourth month of the year is here
With all the promises of renewal

    And that’s no fooling!

Thanks for inspiring me.

A Blessing, From Me To You

    Dear Unsealers,

I wrote this poem as an Irish blessing for St. Patrick’s Day. But I didn’t get the chance to post it here.

    The poem is as follows:

A blessing from my three leaf clover

May the sunshine shine upon you
The warmth of the light comforting

For rainbows to appear in the sky
As their colors bring joy & hope
    The gray skies parting

    A sense of belonging
In the company of loved ones
Those you hold dearest in your heart

The clover came over from Ireland
May its luck find you, as it did me

    Here’s to a Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I want to also send some back to you, and that’s :may the sunshine shines upon you, where the light comforts you as well. And I past this inspiration, while holding the clover very near, to and with all my love…read more

    In The Last Year

    Dear Unsealers,

This note is something that I’ve done for the last two years. As my friend Chari Pere posted about the things that she had done in the last year. The following is this years list.

    In the last year…

I’ve moved on from a job of eight years and found a new, albeit temporary job

The trip to Italy happened after a two year delay

I took in the view from the roof garden of The Met

The Roger Waters concert at MSG happened after a two year delay

I’ve taken to reading and posting my poems on Instagram, Youtube, Swell & Tiktok

I had a mini Made To Do This reunion in person, meeting Rachel Jackson, Kristina Tickler Welsome & Jayati Vora for dinner

    I awoke the abundant me

I took in the beauty of “The Beautiful Blue Danube” and clapped along to “The Radetzky March” during the Salute To Vienna concert .

I’ve completed Amy Kay’s “Poem A Day” challenge during NaPoWriMo

I got to see the musical “Company” during it’s Broadway run

I got to meet Victoria Williams during her stay in NYC

I challenged myself by taking Megan Falley’s “Poems That Don’t Suck” course

I’m hosting an open mic for writers and poets with disablities on 3/30

I have my next trip booked for the end of September, to Greece; with one more on the cards before the year ends.

I’m taking steps to become a more independent adult

I know this list doesn’t cover everything that’s happened in the last year.

I’m trying to move my life into a more positive direction

It doesn’t feel like things are happening, though

I won’t stop trying to make forward progress with my life.

I’m working on more exciting things, that would include more traveling. I want to do more,…read more

  • Watching Your Future Self Soar

    Dear Unsealers,

Hello Oswald from 2023, it’s me from 2043!

That’s right, I’m speaking to you for twenty years in the future. From my spacious pied a terre in Nice, France at sunset. And yes, that’s a bottle of rose wine that you brought home from your trip in 2019 that’s being shared with your female companion.

I’ve managed to stay for five years and become a resident of France. In the meantime, I’ve been exploring the rest of the European continent.

I’ve come from the future to remind you that everything that you desire is possible. Not as far away as it feels. I know that you’re wondering how I got here.

It began with a realization late one winter’s night. You visualized what life would be twenty years from now. And you imagined coming back to Nice. The smile was beaming through the silence. But you had to fight off the sense of doubt and lack of self-worth.

Just saying the words “I’m Ready” proved to be difficult. But through the struggle, the phrase came out.

You started to get clear on what you wanted for your future. To be able to tell your story in a way that resonates with people, disabled and not.

With the vision written out, you had the plan to execute. A pair of books would be written, the first one a memoir. Chronicling the life of resiliency that was lived with Cerebral Palsy. And the second, a chronicle of your travels. With both books, you would have something to speak about in interviews for podcasts, IG Lives, and written articles.

After a lifetime of letting it define you, the quest for your independence began.

You found a job as an editorial assistant for a publishing company. Learning as you go to pick up the skills for putting the book together while gaining a stream of income.

The skills of adulthood would be learned, thanks to working with the Center for the Independence of the Disabled. And they would also help in finding your first apartment in Queens.

Though, you would still join your family for holiday dinners. And you had them over for dinner on your first New Year’s Eve at the place. In time, a bigger apartment would be found.

You would spend countless hours writing your story and get help from a friend’s publishing house for the first book deal. The Poetic Seasons poetry books and the memoirs are under The Key Publishing House umbrella.

It would be a whirlwind third trip to France that sealed the deal on staying. Crisscrossing the country in a month from the France-Spain border to Corsica. And as you visited Nice, the magic of the Promenade caught your eye again. You would begin the residency process by spending time at home and abroad.

With all the exterior changes, I forget to mention that you’re a happier person now. With a healthier perspective on life and more confidence in yourself. And you met someone in Caterina that brings out the best in you.

Why am I here writing this letter?

I wanted to remind you to dream bigger and better for your life. You’re more than capable of achieving what your heart desires. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out in the world.

And above all else, love every inch of yourself. You’re an inspiration!

    Dear, Unsealers;
I wrote this poem after seeing the full moon on Monday evening. In my backyard, the words came out.

    The poem is as follows:

    Under the full moon

    Zoomed in at full light
    A luminous sight tonight

The transition happening before my eyes
    Between day and night
Clouds above, with patches of clear sky
With the colors of the evening shine

A moment of stillness after a long day
Far away from all the noise
Of the office, commute and my mind

As I step back towards the lights
And conclude the day at my door

There’s one more thing to silently say…

    Goodnight, moon!

  • Good Afternoon From New York City

    Dear Unsealers,

My name is Oswald Perez. I’m a poet and writer that lives in New York City. I’m also a person that has Cerebral Palsy.

I’m thankful to have found this group. It took a bit of effort on my part to take the leap and become a member of the group.

As I happened to be scrolling one night and came across the sponsored advertisement for the group. After asking for the Zoom link for one of the candid conversations, I knew that this would be a new landing spot for me.

I’m in the midst of trying to become my ideal self, or something close to it.

Among my goals in life, I want to become an independent adult and a writer/speaker. Someone tells his story of inspiration to those that need to hear the message. That it’s okay to embrace every inch of yourself and not let the circumstances of the past define who you are in the present moment.

And a person that chronicles everything that he’s doing. His travels, hopes, dreams and ambitions for books, posts on various feeds and videos.
