  • Favorite Shoes

Life is like your favorite pair of shoes.
Every step you take is in the right direction,
    Even when you’re hesitant.
    Growth.

Sometimes, you may get a little worn,
Maybe scuffed, but you don’t give up.
    Just buy some cleaner
And brush the battle scars off.
    Resilience.

Then grab some polish to shine them up.
Good as new, on to new beginnings.
    Persistence.

Why throw away a perfect pair of shoes because they’ve walked a few miles
And don’t smell as fresh as they used to?
You could easily keep using them to step over obstacles and remain grateful for what they’ve gotten you through.
    Reflective.

When time-worn, they’re at their best because you’ve lived some life in them.
The lessons learned through many journeys is what makes them your favorite.
    Wisdom.

    • Lovely poem! I like the analogy between life and old pair of shoes; just cause things aren’t perfect doesn’t mean you shouldn’t continue to persist through the current situation.

“The lessons learned through many journeys is what makes them your favorite.” I love that quote, and it’s so true. The memories we make is what makes things special.

    • Wow, I love this!! Your comparisons are unique, and I love your descriptions throughout the poem. Even though what’s on the outside may look different as we age, we never have to let the inside change if we don’t want to. Let your personality shine through, because I can tell you have a great one. Amazing work ♥

  • Lauren,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this poem and applying it to your own experiences. That’s why I challenged myself to write more and share more this year. I hope to share something that will be meaningful to someone else.

I am glad you took the opportunity to attend your dream college. Sometimes you have to step out on faith while ignoring doubt.

Thank you for the warm welcome into this wonderful platform.

  • A Perfect Day

    An alarm-clock-free morning,
    There’s nothing more soothing.
I took my first sip of coffee
As I lounged by the window,
Absorbing the beauty of a day minus responsibilities.
    “I love everything about today,”
I affirmed, consumed by my thoughts:

Maybe, I’ll make the hour-long drive
    To my favorite beach,
Visit a couple of discount stores,
Or stop by that cozy little restaurant, I adore,
For a savory meal and a delicious treat.

    I could always search for
    A binge-worthy show,
    Grab a bottle of Chardonnay,
    Pop some popcorn and snack,
Until I drift off into the most pleasant sleep,
    Cultivating the sweetest dreams.

    “You know what?”
    I ask myself aimlessly…
    “You’re overthinking it…
The only way today will be perfect
Is if I do all of these things.”
    So, I did.

  • 2024 Figured Out: A Poem

    It’s 2024.
    The welcoming celebrations have ceased.
On my first day back to work,
    A coworker asked,
“What do you want for yourself this year?”

I said, “It isn’t a matter of what I want,
    It’s what I need…
    There’s nothing
    I need more than to
    free my mind of thoughts
    on what I can’t do.”

    She pondered…
    Then questioned,
“How will you get to that place?”

    “I must embrace fear,
    let life run its course,
    face challenges head-on, and
    gracefully excuse myself
    from my zone of comfort.

    With that, I need to
    express gratitude,
take better care of my body, and
    value my mental.

Last, I’ll build on my knowledge,
    smile more often,
    act with love, and
work to master the art of patience,”
    I declared with great excitement.

“I see you have it all figured out,”
    she replied.
“No, I just know what I need,”
    I assured her, casually.

    • This is beautiful. When I read the line “Free my thoughts of what I can’t do” this story in my own life came to mind.

In my senior year of high school, I was waitlisted at Columbia. At the time, it was ranked the eighth-best college in the country. In June (just as I was about to graduate), I got mail that notified me I was removed from the waitl…read more
