Write A Letter To A Place That Changed You 3 weeks, 6 days ago
Dear Ireland,
You began as a place on my bucket list, a destination I wasn’t sure I’d ever see.
Then work, a new job, carried me over the Atlantic to the place of my ancestors.
Dublin and its surrounding towns welcomed me with open arms, pints of Guinness, golf on a links course, and a night filled with live Irish music, eating shepherds pie, and dancing.
I discovered good people and that I could drive on the opposite side of the road. My American brain made the change after some tense rides on roads too narrow for two cars at once and roundabouts with too many lanes.
More visits followed, each one as good as the last.
Memories were made with my soon to be wife, my daughter turning drinking age, and my dear friend of many years.
We stilled our car on an Irish country road and witnessed for ourselves the legend of coasting backward up a hill, defying gravity.
We climbed from the base of a mountain, The Long Woman’s Grave, to the top and let the wind hold us up from falling forward.
Ireland, you are my home away from home.
Never change from loving American eighties and country music. Never change your menu. May your people never lose their good, Irish soul.Save me a Guinness until next time we meet.

Thank you for your reply and well wishes for our little tree. It is sprouting many leaves, but no apples as of yet. Might take a few years to get apples. Best wishes!

I wish you and your son well. Peanuts and peanut products are a terrible thing to do without.
This poem was inspired by a passionate argument by my brother in law who swears against jelly or jam on his peanut butter sandwiches.
I appreciate your reply and look forward to your writing.

Dear Pink Lady Apple Tree
Early spring is bringing tiny green leaves to the tips of your twigs.
Last year we planted you. We were so proud of your place in our yard. Big plans and juicy apples were expected, but then a plague of deer came and ate all the budding, baby apples you had sprouted. Deer ate many of your leaves, too.
We were devastated.
As the end of winter approached and you looked so frail, we worried you might not make it to year two. All sticks and no style, you looked weak after months of cold and snow and ice and wind.
You survived. You may still thrive.
We have a plan to hide your apples this year, to try and save them from the many savage deer that will come for your tasty fruit. My wife read that one inventive gardener hangs Christmas tree decorations, red and green bulbs, on the branches of her apple trees. The deer try their best to bite them, but they are quickly made frustrated when they can’t break through. They give up and get going. We will try this trick this year.
Our dreams for you are blossoming as you grow, and we hope you will sprout apples as spring turns to summer.
We will water around you daily. You are in a sunny spot. We will protect you from your predators.
All signs point to Pink Lady apples in the future.
Godspeed.

KPK, I love how you use the metaphor of this apple tree to evoke the same emotions we feel when someone or something tries to bring us down. Sometimes it feels like as soon as we start to bloom, someone destroys our blossoms. I hope that your apple tree defeats the odds and thrives this year. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Thank you so much for your kind words. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend trying a bacon, cheese, fried egg on top burger with all your favorite fixings. You won’t regret it.

P.B. Only
Peanut butter only for me
on my soft bread, between two slices.
Most, maybe eight out of ten,
want jam or jelly, but not me. Please,
please let the taste linger peanut butter
for as long as the flavor will last. Many might think I am extreme,
but I simply don’t want to distract
from the peanut butter taste.
Waste not your gelatinous jam.
I am not interested in soiling
my bread for the sake of fitting in.Crunchy or creamy are okay.
Crust on or crust cut off works well.
I prefer no drink to cleanse
my palate from peanut buttered bread.
So please just keep your jelly to yourself.
The rest of us will eat just fine.P.B. only for me today,
tomorrow, and the next day, as well.
We will get along just fine
in most all other aspects of our
life together, forever, my dear love.
Should you grant me this one politeness.Voting is open!

KPK, there is something to be said for knowing what you like and staying loyal to it! Much to my disappointment, my son is allergic to peanuts, so I do not get to enjoy the delight that comes with peanut butter very often. I hope that you are able to enjoy this passion as often as you like! Thank you for sharing your experience!

To my Brazilian
Dear Silk’s Brazilian Burger,
I quake at the smell of you. The fullness of your flavor excites every taste bud my tongue can muster when I take you in.
Mustard and ketchup, lettuce and bacon, American cheese, and, of course, a runny yolk fried egg on top.
A bun is only necessary so I can wrap my hands around you and pull you near and into me.
Medium well, pink in the middle, is the perfect way to grill you, my angus beef patty.
I hunger for you.
Play with my senses no more.
Let me have you.
At last you arrive at my table.
Fries on the side.
Xoxo

KPK, there are few things in life better than taking a bite of your favorite food, especially when it is cooked to perfection. This is a beautiful love poem to a burger that sounds absolutely epic. Thank you for making me hungry and inspiring me! I enjoyed reading your work!
