My Sweet Shelley,
They played this video of you at your memorial
Where you’re just a little girl running in a field talking about butterflies
I think it’s your birthday
And it is not lost on me all the innocence absent from those later years
My dear friend you’re nothing but an urn now.I think about the fact that we all had daughters.
And I wish more than ever our girls could all meet.
And we would tell them about us as little girls.
Running in fields
Talking about butterflies
On our birthdays.—
I love you, I miss you, madly.Voting is closed

Emily, this is a beautiful tribute to your friend Shelley. Losing a childhood friend is life-changing in many ways. Not only does it make death seem so much closer, but it also rips away any lingering ideas we might have about being invincible ourselves. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Moments of Peace for You
He goes for a run
So I lay in his bed and stared out the window
I watch the wind move the grass, the flowers, the weeds in the garden next door
I’ve been in a season of cover songs
So I play one I know will make me think and feel and yearn
I’m so acutely aware
Of how present moment I am
And I never want to forget it.I never want to forget the smallest of moments I felt safest in.
I never want to forget in the moments of terror, depravity, and heartache I’ve lived; there are moments of peace in the easiest of places if I want to pay attentionA neighbor’s flower bed
Feeling the wind’s chill through an open window under a lover’s blanket
A new take on an old song that blows your mind
A quick phone call to a loved one ending in an “I love you, goodbye.”
In giving and receiving space for and from others
In recognizing I’m allowed to take up space.Voting is closed

Beautiful, I love finding moments of calm in the smallest places and I love that you wrote that sentiment down. I love the way you describe this kind of peace and how you show appreciation for it. We can all find these moments if we pay attention.
