  • Representation: From Generation to Generation

Representation; it’s a word I only truly learned about in the last 5 or so years…and I still have a lot to learn about. You see, growing up I loved movies, books, television shows; basically any escape from real life was my jam. Luckily, there were a lot of shows, celebrities and characters in stories that I, as a blue eyed white girl…read more

    • Oh man this was such a good read. Your first paragraph was so raw! & it was relatable. I wish our generation had an easier time healing but it’s wonderful that people have the courage to share their stories. Someone, somewhere will read that now & relate & not feel so alone anymore.

      • Thank you so much Denise, your comment made my day!! I agree completely; our generation spent most of our lives trying to live up to the expectations of not only the media, but the generations before us. We all need to take the time to heal, and connect with each other, and hopefully continue to have the courage to share our stories, however…read more

    • Your message is so true. There is it is much representation as there should be now these days. There might have been a development, but I feel like there should be more. It kind of sucks especially with the society that we live in that there are not as many people being represented on television as they should be, and even if they were represented…read more

  • Different Shades of Black

Being a Black Man and an Actor and Filmmaker, people sometimes tell me I should be happy when I see a Black person in a movie cause I am being “Represented.” Yet, I try to explain that I am not. My Family is from the South, particularly Louisiana and although I was born in Cleveland, Ohio, I have more of the personality and attitude of someone fro…read more

    • This is so true. It’s kind of sad because a lot of people think we’re represented because they focus on one part of an area or make us attach ourselves to a representation of a whole different culture from what we may come from. I’ve seen it happen with movies, such as Black Panther and Woman King. and what’s crazy is that back in the days? W…read more

  • A Fourteen Letter Word

R-E-P-R-E-S-E-N-T-A-T-I-O-N. It is a fourteen letter word but the word reflects so much more than an arrangement of fourteen letters. If you look up the definition, it means ‘the description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way or as being of a certain nature’. Yet, the definition lacks feeling. A feeling that until rec…read more

    • What an amazing letter. I often ask the same questions. Why can’t more non-traditional groups of people be showcased on more platforms. Why can’t we learn to accept people for who they are. I do not have all the answers but hopefully our voices will lead to positive change.

      All the best,
      Shelley

Hopefully so. Hopefully, those of us that want to see change, will go on to create media and stories where the change is present so that representation for all can become a reality

I love that you have so much compassion and passion for an issue that maybe doesn’t directly impact you as much as it impacts someone that you love. “Why not?” is a great question. Dear Represetation,

For me you are not a hollow euphemism. You do not consist of empty words or hollow promises. You are devoid of minimal effort only.

For me you mean a lot. You mean lost sleep, long drives and somehow amazing stories in between. You are the careful listening to a story from an elder about an experience I never had. You are…read more

      • Kayjah,

Thanks for the kind words. My ideals of Representation involve me becoming the antithesis of my own experiences growing up. I grew up largely unseen and unheard. I carried a lot of hurt and heartache into my adult life. It was then that I resolved to be directly opposite of what I went through.

    • I’m so sorry for your loss. Just know that your mother was the best mirror you could of had and she’s still mirroring you but from a higher place and watching over you. Representation matters. I agree with your take on representation. It is the space where history, culture and imagination can converse in a way that everyone feels seen and heard.
